If a rock has ever pinged off your windshield on a Minnesota highway, you already know the anxiety that follows — is this going to cost me? The good news is that Minnesota drivers are actually in a better position than most when it comes to windshield coverage. Here’s what you need to know.

Minnesota Has a Windshield Law — and It’s on Your Side

Minnesota is one of only a handful of states with specific legislation protecting drivers when their windshield is damaged. Under Minnesota Statute § 65B.134 MN STAT § 65B.134, any auto insurance policy that includes comprehensive coverage must also offer the insured the option of full glass coverage with zero deductible. That’s not a perk — it’s a legal requirement.

This means your insurer is required by law to make this option available to you. If you opted in (and many Minnesotans have without even realizing it), your windshield repair or replacement is fully covered — no deductible, no out-of-pocket cost.

The Difference Between Comprehensive and Full Glass Coverage

Understanding your policy starts with knowing what type of coverage you have for glass damage.

  • Comprehensive Coverage
Pays for windshield damage caused by events outside your control — road debris, hailstorms, falling tree branches, vandalism, or wildlife strikes. This is the standard coverage most drivers carry, and it does cover windshield damage. However, your regular deductible applies to full replacements, which can range anywhere from $250 to $1,000 depending on your policy.
  • Full Glass Coverage
Sometimes called a “zero deductible glass endorsement,” this add-on eliminates the deductible entirely for glass repairs and replacements. Minnesota law requires insurers to offer this option, but you have to elect it. If you’re not sure whether you have it, check your declarations page or call your insurance agent — you may be covered and not know it.

Repair vs. Replacement: What Insurance Typically Covers

Not all windshield damage is treated the same. Insurance companies generally distinguish between repairs and replacements:

  • Repairs
Chips and cracks smaller than a quarter or shorter than 6 inches that are not in the driver’s direct line of sight are often covered with little or no deductible even under standard comprehensive policies — because repairing is far cheaper than replacing.
  • Replacements
Larger cracks, edge damage, or anything that compromises the structural integrity of the glass falls under your comprehensive coverage and will trigger your deductible unless you have full glass coverage.

⚠ Important Note — ADAS Vehicles

If your vehicle has Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) — lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, or forward collision alerts — your windshield replacement will likely require professional sensor recalibration afterward. Many Minnesota insurance policies that cover replacement also cover this recalibration, but it’s worth confirming with your insurer before work begins.

You Have the Right to Choose Your Own Shop

Minnesota law is clear on this point: your insurance company cannot require you to use a specific repair shop. When recommending a vendor, insurers must advise you that you have the right to choose any licensed glass company you prefer. They cannot use pressure, incentives, or threats to steer you elsewhere.

You do want to make sure the shop you choose is approved by your insurer to handle direct billing, which saves you from paying upfront and waiting on reimbursement.

Will Filing a Claim Raise Your Rates?

This is one of the most common concerns — and the good news is that in Minnesota, filing a glass claim under comprehensive coverage generally does not affect your premium. Glass claims are treated differently from collision claims because the damage isn’t caused by driver error.

The Bottom Line

If you have comprehensive coverage in Minnesota, your windshield damage is covered. If you have full glass coverage, it’s covered with no deductible. Either way, don’t wait — Minnesota law also prohibits driving with a cracked or discolored windshield that obstructs your vision, so getting it fixed quickly isn’t just smart, it’s the law.
